Co-led by Dr. Rania Salem and me, this project looks at how young Egyptian Canadians are coming of age in a landscape of skyrocketing rents, unstable jobs, and rising xenophobia.
Drawing on the idea of “waithood” from the Middle East and North Africa, we ask how timelines around leaving home, work, and family are reimagined after migration.
By centering the voices of 1.5-generation youth and their parents in the Greater Toronto Area, we uncover both the obstacles and the surprising forms of support that shape paths to adulthood in Canada.
The study is based at the University of Toronto and supported by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant.
